At a speech in Strasbourg this week, I welcomed the launch of the European Year of Development, which will put international development at the heart of EU policy. This follows new figures showing 85% of the British public backing policies which help people in developing countries.
With 2015 marking the target date for the delivery of the Millennium Development Goals, the launch provides a unique opportunity to build a coherent European strategy to reduce poverty and help those people living in the world’s poorest countries. This is vital for the EU to take a leading role on securing agreement for a new global development framework at the UN in September.
