Ensuring LGBTI Rights in ACP States

September 22, 2014

I am delighted to have been appointed to the Delegation to the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, which brings together elected representatives of the European Parliament and the elected representatives of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States.

The ACP plays an important role scrutinising how EU money is used to finance development projects in ACP states for economic development, social and human development and regional cooperation and integration.

While EU money must go towards strengthening democracy, promoting good governance, protecting human rights and encouraging fair trade, the EU must also use its significant clout to encourage greater LGBTI rights and reverse the hardening line of certain ACP countries against homosexuality.

I have already begun to use my position on the Delegation to do just this.
