Steps must be taken to decarbonise road transport sector

June 17, 2015

Today I wrote to Miguel Arias Cañete, European Commissioner for Energy and Climate Action, ahead of tomorrow’s high-level conference on EU’s next steps to decarbonise the road transport sector.

Along with fellow MEPs, I am calling on the Commission to confirm that by 2016 they will propose CO2 targets for cars and vans for year 2025.

Here’s the copy of my letter and the other signatories:

17th June 2015

Dear Commissioner Cañete,

On the 18th June the European Commission will organise a high-level conference on the EU action to decarbonise the road transport sector, which will be attended by yourself, Internal Market and Industry Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska, and Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc.

In light this event we are writing to call on you to confirm that by 2016 the Commission will propose CO2 targets for cars and vans for year 2025.

The European Parliament expressed its position for the next set of CO2 targets for cars and vans to be set for 2025 in its deliberations on Regulation (EU) No 333/2014. During the negotiations of this regulation the Commission committed itself, by means of an official declaration, to assessing the range of 68-78g CO2/km for a 2025 target.

We call on you to honour that commitment. Following an evaluation of the success of the current targets for cars and vans for 2015 and 2020, it is crucial to assess what the most cost-effective targets for 2025 are. These proposals should be published at the latest by next year, to give industry enough lead time and market certainty and to allow for a comprehensive debate on this important issue.

We look forward to working with you when future proposals on the 2025 CO2 targets for cars and vans come for consideration before the European Parliament.

Yours Faithfully,

Seb Dance MEP
